Scratch Coat

The first coat of plaster or cement render which is scratched horizontally to form a key for the second coat to bond with.

Crucial to the process is applying the second coat at the right time especially not too soon.

Sign on the Night Discounts

Whilst not exactly a Building term this hard sell tactic is very common in the construction industry and is almost always a complete con to get you to sign a contract before thinking things through and sleeping on it.

It goes without saying avoid these type of companies like the plague.

Soil Pipe / Stench Pipe

A large pipe that carries liquid and solid waste from our bathrooms and toilets to the sewer or septic tank.

Spar Dash

Thin sharp fragments of coloured stone thrown/pressed into a smooth cement render to form a more vibrantly coloured version of pebble dash.

As the stones are smooth they do tend to fall out fairly frequently leaving bald patches over the years. This also occurs in heavy rain when a small trail of spars can be found at the foot of the wall.

Modern equivalents that Wethertex use are based upon a resin render with coloured marble embedded into the render mix during manufacture and permanently retained in the render by the adhesive quality of the polymer resins.

Spray Applied Wall Coatings

Billed as ” 20 times thicker than masonry paint ” these high pressure spray applied paints have a chequered history to say the least.

The sales techniques of some companies using these type of paints are even more high pressure than the kit they use to spray them on with !

If you are looking for a purely decorative masonry paint then please check out any spray paint companies thoroughly before agreeing to anything.

Tyrolean

Yet another type of sand and cement based render. This time the second finish coat is mixed to a workable consistency, funneled into a wooden tyrolean box where at the turn of a handle it is splattered onto the receiving scratch coat.

Probably the quickest and certainly the cheapest of all the cement render based coverings.

Vapour Barrier

A layer of impervious material – often heavy duty polythene sheeting – used to prevent the passage of moisture  through a structure

Vapour Permeability

A numerical measure of the ease in which water as a vapour, ie a gas , can pass through a material.

As an example a typical clay brick is measured at between 5 and 10 whilst some of the discredited plastic spray paints have been measured at over 50.

To put this in perspective the UK Construction Testing Authorities  – the British Board of Agrement – class any material below 20 as being suitably breathable to put on the outside of a house.

Wethertex scores 12.8 on this test and so is classed and rated as being highly suitable and beneficial for the walls.

Wet Rot

Decay of timber due to wet or damp conditions and not due to fungal attack like dry rot.
