Driving rain is one of the root causes of damp walls within the UK and homes in the western half of the country are especially susceptible to penetrating damp from wind-driven rain.

The map opposite shows areas of the UK that are deemed to be of such a high risk of rain penetration that cavity walls insulation should not automatically be installed in these homes.

The main reason for cavity walls was to capture the water that penetrates the first layer of bricks in cavity trays and prevent it tracking through to the internal wall. The predominant weather pattern in the UK is for south westerly winds to sweep across the country hence the darker shading on the left side of the map.
