Spray Applied Wall Coatings

Generally, spray coatings will be a quick and relatively cheap way of smartening up your property and hiding defects in the surface of the wall. The paint used comes in diffrent textures including a smooth and some of the paints available have undergone BBA testing and have been given 10 year minimum life expectancies with some spray/roller or brush applied having a 15 year life expectancy

The process, if carried out correctly should not leave overspray on down pipes, fascia boards etc.  The process usually involves bag rubbing of the mortar joints, if the property is plain brick, or any “patching up” work on cement renders before the spraying takes place.

Spray Coats Must Breathe Sufficiently

Some of the spray coatings that are applied today cannot breathe sufficiently well enough  on solid walls to allow internal moisture to escape and this often leads to a build up behind the paint film which ultimately lifts the paint covering away from the wall. Always check that the coating has been tested for vapour permeability and has a vapour permeability factor of below 20 MNsg on a solid wall or below 25 MNsg on a cavity wall. The British standard for breathability is anything below 25 across all wall types.

Once moisture builds up enough spray coatings blister and peel leaving an area that cannot be repaired, the whole wall would need replacing.  When moisture is trapped behind the sprayed product it causes a sagging effect leading to the stretching of the coating and eventually it will tear and peel.

As a general rule of thumb either check with us or contact the manufacturer to get the best advice as to which , if any spray coat is most suitable . Unfortunately you cannot  always trust the applicator’s level of knowledge as he is using someone else’s materials unlike our own in house fitting teams.

Poor Prepataion Leads to Poor Performance

Another problem apart from sufficient breathability applies to any type of masonry renovation or coating work and not just to spray applied wall coatings and paints. That problem is poor preparation. All surfaces must be sound, clean and even and where appropriate be properly primed before any masonry paint or specialised textured coating is applied, be that by trowel or by spray gun.

Again manufacturer’s instructions must be followed and in the case of spray coats it is essential that the primer coat is applied in the correct temperature and is fully dry before the top coat is sprayed onto the wall. In fact the UK’s largest spray paint manufacturer stipulate their primer must be left for at least 6 hours at 20 degrees celsius and the top coat should be sheeted to protect against rain within the first 6 hours at least.

Other potential common problems with exterior wall finishes:
Painted Brick :: Pebble Dash :: Blown Brickwork :: Tyrolean :: Cement Render

Wethertex™ has a range of systems that will eliminate all these problems – GUARANTEED and when a spray coat is being considered our roller or trowel applied wall coating is often cheaper and is up to 6 times  thicker than the most commonly available texture spray paint coatings
