A Guide to Wall Coatings
wall coatings
is a generic term used by exterior wall coatings companies to distance their specialist exterior coatings from traditional external emulsion paints developed by the likes of Dulux, Sandtex and Leyland. Unlike traditional
masonry paints
specialist wall coatings cannot be purchased directly for a DIY application by the home-owner or local decorator.
Specialist
exterior wall coatings
are only available from
wall coating companies
who also apply them using trained operatives, skilled in both preparing the surface properly and in only applying suitable wall coatings in the correct weather conditions.
There are many different types of wall coatings from several manufacturers and this is where some knowledge of the differences can prevent the home-owner from making the wrong choice.
Not all wall coatings are suitable for all weather conditions and all surfaces so always seek
expert advice
from trusted experts.

Types of Wall Coatings
The following is a brief summary of the three most popular
synthetic wall coatings
used on brickwork and external wall rendering such as pebble dash, tyrolean, cement render. The list starts at the bottom end in terms of quality and costs and we hope you find it useful.
Acrylic Wall Coatings
Acrylic wall coatings
are generally several times thicker than standard masonry paints and should last twice as long. Through-coloured and UV resistant they are best suited to newly built or rendered walls with ventilated cavities and in areas that are not exposed to heavy weathering.
These wall coatings are not recommended for exposed walls and should not be used to cure damp. Acrylic wall coatings are the least breathable of all the wall coatings and need mild dry weather when applied.
Silicon Wall Coatings
The use of silicon in wall coatings provides a higher degree of anti-weathering qualities and these wall coatings are especially good at resisting the sun’s UV rays and are highly water proof as well.
Silicon wall coatings
are therefore best suited to walls where driven rain is an issue and soiling from traffic or industrial pollution is a concern.
Again these wall coatings are generally 10 to 20 times thicker than paint and are
spray applied
like acrylic wall coatings. Breathability can be an issue if used on damp walls and whilst they are more weather proof than acrylic wall coatings, great care must be taken to ensure they are applied in the correct temperatures and rain and frosts must be avoided for 24 hours after application.
Resin Wall Coatings
The Kings of wall coatings are resin based due to their exceptional all round ability. Completely immune to water, sunlight and frosts these textured wall coatings also
hide surface irregularities
and sit at the very top of the wall coatings industry.
The reason Wethertex™ uses
Pliolite™ Resin wall coatings
is that resins enable the wall coating to be more
waterproof and breathable
than any other acrylic or silicon based wall coating and are suitable for all year round application.
They are water proof and frost proof within 30 minutes and Wethertex wall coatings can even be applied directly over sound previously painted surfaces!
